Volunteer in the Historic Orchard with UC Master Gardeners!
Volunteer in the Historic Orchard with UC Master Gardeners!
July 2, 2025 9:30 am - 11:30 am
The Historic Orchard is a 3.3-acre site planted in 1994 and located in Guadalupe Gardens just south of Taylor Street, adjacent to the Heritage Rose Garden and River Park trails. The map below shows what kinds of trees used to grow in the Santa Clara Valley. In the 1930s and ’40s almost everyone who lived here was engaged in the business of fruit production: growing, picking, packing, canning, selling, or otherwise supporting the industry. Today, with very few orchards remaining, this is a place where adults and children can come to experience a piece of local history. Fruit harvested from the Historic Orchard is donated to Second Harvest of Silicon Valley and local shelters.
Help us maintain the River Park's Historic Orchard including:
- tree planting and pruning - disease diagnosis and treatment - sun scald prevention painting - sheet mulching - experimenting with different types of irrigation or ground cover - grafting for improved pollination
Restrooms will be available at the Visitor Center.
Please note this event may cancel in the case of inclement weather.

School groups or corporate teams must contact the Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@grpg.org to schedule events.

Volunteer in the Rotary PlayGarden!
July 2, 2025 9:30 am - 11:30 am
The Rotary PlayGarden provides an inclusive place to play for all children and their families, with a focus on children with special needs. The resulting PlayGarden design incorporates standard play elements and adds adaptive swings, a wheelchair-accessible merry go round, kinetic art, sensory experiences, and much more.
Included in the garden are a variety of native and drought tolerant plants and trees. As the gardens establish themselves they need maintenance. Tasks may include weed removal, minor infrastructure repairs, tree pruning, mulching, and other tasks as necessary.
Restrooms will available on site.
Please note this event may cancel in the case of inclement weather.
