Community Homeschool Investigators of the River Park
What makes CHIRP special?

We are moving to a trimester model! This will allow us to build knowledge throughout a longer time period, scaffolding student discoveries into deeper, more authentic learning. Students will also have the opportunity to complete a capstone project throughout each trimester, better serving their individual interests and desired focus areas; developing real-world research, project management, and presentation skills; and applying their theoretical knowledge to practical concepts.

Students will be given β€œhomework” tasks to complete between most sessions. No simple β€œbusy work,” these tasks will be reviewed during the small-group meeting each week and used for class analysis, projects, and further study. As they will be a vital part of the students’ learning in this new model, we ask for the support of all families in ensuring time is set aside and students are supported each week so that they may complete this important independent work.

We are proud to introduce our capstone projects! As part of CHIRP, students will complete an independent research project on a subject of their own choosing within the realm of the trimester. (For the fall trimester, younger students could research an animal, a habitat, an adaptation such as fur or feathers, etc. Older students could research an important biologist or naturalist, a school of thought, an ecosystem, a clade, a time period, etc.) There will be the opportunity to receive guidance on their project throughout the trimester, but most of the work is to be completed independently. The last session of the trimester will be the opportunity for the students to present their work and receive feedback from peers and instructors. This project will help students synthesize and develop knowledge, while also strengthening skills such as time management, follow-through, communication and presentation skills, and more.
