Adopt-A-Rose
Valentine's Day Rose AdoptionGive a Valentine’s gift that can speak volumes without a word ever being said. Traditionally roses are the expected gift, but what about a rose that will bloom the entire year and whose color represents something unique about your special someone? If this gift sounds perfect for your Valentine, look no farther than the San Jose Heritage Rose Garden! With your donation of $50.00, Friends of Guadalupe River Park & Gardens can help you select the perfect rose. Your rose will be marked in the garden with an engraved plaque with your own personal inscription for one full year. Catalyst for Change: A History of Civic Plazas in San Jose, chronicles
San Jose's seats of government from the colonial period, up to and
including the new complex on East Santa Clara Street. The book
details the seven buildings that have served as San Jose's city hall
from pueblo days, while providing an overview of city government
itself, from the Spanish period to the mid-twentieth century.
The
seven-square-block neighborhood, the site of the new Civic Plaza,
had a rich history dating from the mid-nineteenth century, and was
home to many of San Jose's early public officials, entrepreneurs and
immigrants. This history is also included in Catalyst,
along with the neighborhood's close social and economic ties to San
Jose State University, located in Washington Square to the south.
The impact of growth and industry on the neighborhood, along with
the subsequent deterioration which characterized most of San Jose's
downtown in the 1970s and 1980s, is also recounted.
Written
by Historian Dolores Mellon, this book provides new insight into the
history of Civic Plazas in San Jose and the Civic Plaza
neighborhood, while placing the new City Hall in this context.
