Falling Into Autumn

Autumn officially begins on September 22 so fall into the season with us as we learn why leaves change colors and the reason for the seasons. Make a leafy craft to take home and discover the science behind the beautiful colors of fall. Take a stroll in the park to see these changes first hand and venture out to the historic orchard to see what fruit might be ready for you to take home.
Annual Scarecrow Making Workshop

The harvest season is on its way and with Pumpkins in the Park just around the corner that means it is scarecrow season! Join us for this fun annual workshop where you create a garden pal, porch buddy, lawn decoration, or contestant for this years Scarecrow Row at Pumpkins in the Park on Saturday, October 11. Gather your scout troop, coworkers, sports team, friends, family, and neighborhood group, whoever – and sign them up for a designated time slot. We provide the materials; you bring your creativity, sense of fun, and any unique items that will make your scarecrow one of a kind.

A Squash By Gosh!

The fall and Halloween wouldn’t be the same without these famous squashes. Dig into the ooey gooey goodness of pumpkins as we learn about their origin, history, botany and so much more. Can you guess how many seeds are inside the pumpkin? Or how much it weighs? If we throw it in the river with a rope tied to it do you think it would sink or float? These are just some of the scientific investigations we will explore as we learn all about these wonderful vegetables. Choose a mini pumpkin to take home and collect seeds for roasting.

Beautiful Backyard Habitats
Saturday, September 13

Join the 90,000 people in the United States who have certified their yards and homes as backyard habitats for wildlife. Sharon McCray, whose yard is certified by the National Wildlife Federation, will show the four basic elements required by wildlife for survival and how to provide them in basic landscaping. You’ll learn about gardening with natives, build a toad house and learn about other wildlife friendly shelters, discover ways of reducing water use while providing ample sources for animals, and so much more! We will even provide the paper work for you to begin certifying your own backyard habitat. Let’s make the world a greener and more wildlife friendly place.
Living Streams for Santa Clara County

Richard McMurtry, Program Coordinator of the Santa Clara County Creeks Coalition, will make a short presentation on the history and future of bringing our Santa Clara streams back to life – full of the fish, birds, trees and other wildlife that once lived here in profusion, without the trash that blights the river and with opportunities for community enjoyment. He will show a short video made in 1992 on the history and the beauty of the Guadalupe River and discuss the challenges and opportunities for citizen advocacy for restoring the ecology and community access to the Guadalupe and its tributaries and other streams in Santa Clara County.

workshops on composting. The two hour workshops, taught by Master
Composter Phil Cornish, will teach you the basic strategies to
successful home composting. Come learn what materials can be composted,
different strategies, and receive tips and hints to choose the best
method for you. Help make the world a greener place by joining in the
fight for waste reduction - It's HOT to ROT!

Kristin Strellis (Walking for Health, Yoga in
the Park, Family Fitness)
Kristin
has a degree in Exercise Science and is certified by the American
Council on Exercise as a Personal Trainer. She has received training by
SCW fitness education as a Moms In Motion Trainer, Kids In Motion
Trainer and Yoga Instructor. She is CPR, AED and First Aid certified.
Kristin enjoys bringing exercise to the outdoors. Join her as she
incorporates fun and education into her classes which challenge both the
mind and body.
